Hands-on engineering for kids
Take it apart.
That's the lesson.
We run engineering workshops where kids open the thing, build the thing, break the thing on purpose, and take it home. We use paper, tape and pennies instead of slides, sinks or one-answer kits.
Kids don't lose curiosity.
It gets scheduled out of them.
Engineering is hard to understand from a slide. A working object makes the tradeoffs visible, especially when the first version fails.
So we run the opposite room. A table covered in parts, a brief with more than one solution, and an adult who will not hand over the answer. Kids fold, cut, tape, load, break and rebuild. The idea lands in their hands before anyone gives it a name.
We are a nonprofit, and the whole point is that this runs on almost nothing. Everything on the table costs less than a set of workbooks, so a school with no makerspace, no lab and no budget line still gets the session.

One complete build per visit, on the desks that are already there. Paper, tape, fasteners and pennies. Nothing wet, nothing hot, nothing that stains a carpet or needs a sink.
01 Paper Gripper Grades 3-5 A card claw that lifts a marker 45 min
Four strips of card and two paper fasteners make a linkage. Move one fastener a hole over and the grip gets stronger or wider, never both. Kids find that hole themselves, then argue about it.
Resets in two minutes. Nothing wet, nothing hot.

02 Card Gears Grades 4-6 A paper crank that turns a wheel 45 min
Printed gear discs on cardstock, one fastener each, a corrugated base. Mesh them and feel the trade: fast and weak, or slow and strong, never both. There is a working version of this lesson further down this page.

03 Index-Card Bridge Grades 5-8 A span loaded with pennies until it drops 40 min
Ten index cards, a metre of tape, two desks and a cup of pennies. Load it one coin at a time until it lets go, then count the coins and look at what folded first.
Cleanup is picking up pennies.

04 Paper Circuits Grades 4-7 A folded card that lights up 45 min
Copper tape, a coin cell, one LED. The circuit is the drawing, so a broken loop is easy to find: the light is off and you can see the gap. Adults count every coin cell in and out.
No soldering, no batteries to charge.

05 Rubber-Band Racer Grades 5-8 A card chassis that drives itself across a desk 50 min
One rubber band stores the energy and wheel size decides how it gets spent. Teams run it down a hallway, change exactly one thing, run it again. Winning usually means giving up top speed.
Everything but the rubber bands gets reused.

Try the lab
Twenty-four teeth into twelve.
Something has to give.
You can explain gear ratio on a worksheet, or you can put a crank in a kid's hand and let the big wheel fight back. Drag it.

One session, start to finish.
Each build fits a 40-60 minute block. A staff member stays in the room; we lead the activity, setup and cleanup.
We show up loaded
One crate that fits on a car seat. Materials for thirty, spares for the ones that tear. Nobody at the school prepares a thing.
Ten minutes of demolition
Every session opens with something getting opened. A click pen, a stapler, a dead keyboard. Screwdrivers only, nothing plugged in.
Build in pairs
One brief, no instructions to copy. Two kids, one problem, parts already on the table.
It fails
On purpose, out loud, in front of everyone. We compare what failed first, then change one variable and test again.
They keep it
It fits in a folder or a pocket, with a card explaining what they did, so they can tell somebody at home.
